PRIVATE FLORAL MASTERCLASS: DUTCH INSPIRED URN ARRANGEMENT

August 20, 2018 By stemsandforks 4 Comments

PRIVATE 1:1 FLORAL MASTERCLASS: DUTCH INSPIRED URN ARRANGEMENT

Private One Day Workshops:

In the spirit of the Dutch Golden Age floral still life paintings, we will be creating beauty “vanitas” style. The idea that life is transient. As fragile as a large blossom standing tall from a thin stem. As futile as a tulip, blooming to a magnificent bloom only to drop its petals and bear seeds showing a new phase of life that is equally beguiling. The certainty of death, the reality of life for both flower and man is ephemeral. All captured in an unruly yet structured arrangement where every stem and bloom is purposeful.

When observing these Dutch masters still life paintings of florals, one can observe the masters painted these still life florals as if they were plucked from the garden and arranged in a whimsical, assymetrcial manner. An insect, a willful jasmin strand or an imperfectly perfect rose. Of course there is much intention and order when arranging an assymetrical wild arrangement. Every flower, every strand and leaf has its place. We will examine how to translate and capture untamed poignant beauty in the form of flowers.

One on one workshops are possible any day (provided availability). Typically 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM

This workshop includes making 1 floral arrangement in a low squat urn and 1 Flower wreath crown.

What is this workshop about?

Learn exclusively with Betty Binon on how to create an asymetrical Old Dutch Master inspired fresh floral arrangement in a low vintage style urn, and a floral wreath that could be worn as a crown or hung on a door.

We will start the day with coffee, sweets and introductions. Betty will first demonstrate a Dutch inspired arrangement, and teach the science behind an “unruly” arrangement.

You will then have the opportunity to gather the flowers from a selection of fall foraged flowers, local and imported intensely coloured flowers, wild vines and more. Will make available some fruits and or shells, nests etc… (props- Based on seasonal availability). Once your flowers have been selected, we will break for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will create your own arrangements with Betty guiding and advising.

Will also include how to select flowers, proper handling, storage and maintenance.

Your floral arrangement will then be professionally photographed by Betty Binon and emailed to you. Or you may have the option of learning how to style and photograph your creation.

About Betty Binon

Betty Binon was the founder and proprietor of Avenue Flower, one of Toronto’s top florists for over 20 years. Hailed as one of the most talented floral designers in the city, she served the finest hotels, restaurants, corporations, massive special events and private clients.

Year after year, she made the Top 5 lists in media and consumer picks, including Toronto Life, The Sun, and BizBash Magazine. She was also a regular contributor to industry publications and TV programs for her expertise on floral trends and instructional pieces.

Some notable past clients include the Royal Family, international dignitaries, TIFF, film and music industry celebrities and multiple Forbes Top 100 corporations.

Her designs were also in high demand from the private sector as she was regularly fully booked for weddings and private events, sometimes three years in advance.

Although Betty is an accomplished floral designer for a wide range of styles, from minimalist to epic, she is currently renowned for her personal favourite: The very chic, unruly whimsical look of Dutch flower arranging and styling.

After selling the successful business in 2015, Betty shifted her focus to family and pursued her love of teaching floral design, baking and photography. She now has a notable client roster that includes work in fashion and food photography, recipe development and influencer relations.
